Hærvejen, a historic route through Jutland

Distance: 1.37 Km

Hærvejen is a scenic hiking route that takes you on a historic journey out of the more than 4.000-year-old road along the Jutland ridge. Depending on what suits you, you can experience the historic route either by bike or on foot.

Get close to the story

Hærvejen has had many names over time: Pilgrimsvejen, Oksevejen, Sakservejen, Gammel Viborgvej, Studevejen and Adelvejen.

In prehistoric times, the Hærvejen was one of the main thoroughfares in Jutland, which pilgrims, bull traders and soldiers in particular used extensively. That is why Hærvejen also goes by names such as Oksevejen, Studevejen, Adelvejen and Pilgrimvejen. Hærvejen was divided in several places in a north and south direction and this was an advantage as it avoided traffic jams.

In addition, the location of the road on the Jutland ridge was of great importance, as the travelers thus avoided passing too many streams. During the 1800th century, much of the traffic on the highway disappeared when more modern methods of transport, such as railways and main roads, were introduced.

Hærvejen today

Today, Hærvejen is a recreational route for those of you who want to hike or cycle along historic tracks and at the same time experience the best of Jutland's nature. You can of course divide the route into smaller chunks depending on how far you want to go, and along Hærvejen you will find several opportunities to enjoy a break, for example at Hotel Egeskoven, where you can have a good meal or something cool to drink, or you can lie down on the way past the Ishuset i Dollerup Hills, when you want to cool off.

Along the Hærvejen, several accommodation options have also been established in old inns and on disused farms, so in the period 1 June to 1 September you have the opportunity to sleep in humble conditions and in common rooms, just as the travelers did in the Middle Ages.
