Kongenshus Memorial Park

Distance: 17.71 Km

Kongenshus Memorial Park is one of Denmark's most beautiful and distinctive nature areas. It is an experience, not only when the heather is in bloom, but all year round.

The history of heath cultivators

In the 1700th century, almost a third of the land in Jutland was heath, which can not be used for growing grain. Therefore, King Frederik the 4th decided in 1723 to convert the heaths into agricultural land.

The king issued a decree promising exemption from the military and tax exemption for the citizens who wanted to cultivate the heath. However, it was not until the loss of Schleswig-Holstein in 1864 that cultivation really took off.

Mindedalen

Along a gorge in the park stand 39 stones, all carved with verses, proverbs or a figure in memory of each lord (an area of power for a group of people) whose population helped to cultivate the heath.

In addition, parish stones have also been laid, on which there are more than 1.200 names engraved with the names of the heathen cultivators.

In 2004, the memorial park was awarded an international prize called 'Carlo Scarpa', for its remarkable landscape.

The memorial park is open all year round and at the entrance to it you will find the exhibition "The faces of the heathen" with pictures of those who lived in the heath landscapes back in the late 1800s.

The nature café at Mindeparken is open during the summer.
