Mønsted Kalkgruber near Viborg is the world's largest lime pit. Here there is a world of experiences that tell about geology, bats and impressive work done by hand.

In Mønsted Kalkgruber you can experience a labyrinth of mine tunnels, exciting history and beautiful nature.

Experiences underground

Explore more than 50 meters down the illuminated mine tunnels, along trickling streams and underground lakes, and see where the bats hibernate all winter. There approx. 4 km of trails that are open to guests, of which approx. 2 km. times stated.

Experiences above ground

Visit the old lime factory and the museum in the old manager's residence. Learn about the history of the limestone mines, about life as a limestone miner and explore the lives of bats.

Take a nice walk in the old lime quarry. The trip is approx. 1 km long, and you can experience the special nature in the area and see the beautiful view of the lake at the bottom of the limestone quarry.

Café Kridthuset

Satisfy your hunger and quench your thirst in the cozy Café Kridthuset after your trip around the lime pits. The café is open on holidays and seasonally.

The playground - the 5 bats

Next to the café is the Bat Playground, where the children can climb and play on the 5 bat species that hibernate in the limestone pits.

Did you know that there are different types of bats? At Mønsted Kalkgruber's playground you can meet five of them. See which one is your favorite to play on - Dam bat, Water bat, Fringed bat, Long-eared bat or Brandt's bat.
