The Old Town Hall on Stænderpladsen in Viborg

Distance: 0.21 Km

The Old Town Hall is located on Stænderpladsen, a small area between the large buildings Viborg Cathedral, Vestre Landsret, Parish Church and Town Hall.

The Old Town Hall

The Old Town Hall, which has been both a town hall, a police station and a courthouse, was originally built as a town hall in the late 1800th century close to Viborg Cathedral.

The Old Town Hall is undergoing a large-scale restoration these years, and is to be a cultural and art-historical powerhouse around the Viborg Museum, the Skovgaard Museum, the Cathedral and all the area's historical stories - in a unified attraction.

At Stænderpladsen you can also see and experience the granite stone with an inscription 1241 Jutland Act 1941, which was erected by Denmark's Jurists in 1941 to commemorate the founding of Jutland Law in 1241.

Also the sculpture Goddess of justice, made by sculptor Anker Hoffmann, stands on Stænderpladsen, which was given to the city by the city's citizens at the city's jubilee in 1950. With a stylus in one hand and a roll of parchment in the other, the goddess of justice has become a symbol of Viborg as an old courthouse. The sculpture is made of Bornholm red granite and was unveiled on 22 June 1954.
