Thorning

Thorning is a city in Central Jutland with 1.007 inhabitants (2014), located in Thorning Parish near primary route 13. The city is located in the northwestern part of Silkeborg Municipality and belongs to the Central Jutland Region.

Thorning is located in a hilly landscape, but with a short distance to the west to the flatter heath and plantation areas of flatter western Jutland. From here it is 22 kilometers to both Silkeborg and Viborg.

With its location on Hærvejen, the town houses a pilgrimage home that serves as a youth hostel for people traveling on the route. Hærvejs Herberget in Thorning has in the period 2012-2018 received 4600 guests, and is the most visited of the 14 hostels from Viborg to the Danish-German border.

Thorning Church is located next door to Sognehus / Herberg and is open from 8.00 to 19.00 in the summer. In the month of July, Evening Singing is offered at 21.00 - 21.30 for hostel guests and locals under the guidance of the parish priest and staff at the church. The church has a beautiful altarpiece, painted by Svend Havsteen-Mikkelsen.

On Silkeborg Museum, Blicheregnen, which is housed in Præstegården, you can see an exhibition about the priest, poet and hunter Steen Steensen Blicher, who was priest in Thorning from 1819 to 1825. The history of the area with the Battle of Grathe heath in 1157 can be seen, and the museum also contains a public exhibition and a nice bird exhibition.

Thorning Outdoor games performs musicals the first week in June.
