Memorial park for Hans Tausen, who came to the city in 1525 and preached the thoughts of the Reformation for several years.

A green memory of the Reformation

The Hans Tausen Memorial is located on the site where the Gråbrødre Church used to stand. This is where the reformer Hans Tausen preached when the ideas of the Reformation gained ground in Viborg in the 1500th century.

The memorial garden was inaugurated in 1836 to mark the 300th anniversary of the Reformation. Today, low beech hedges mark the outline of the former church and allow one to form an impression of the building's location.

The memorial support of HE Freund

In the middle of the complex stands the memorial to Hans Tausen, created by the Golden Age sculptor HE Freund. The monument consists of three sandstone blocks on a granite base.

A marble relief shows Hans Tausen with a book in his hand. He is depicted with features from ancient art, almost like an apostle. On the sides of the monument you can see, among other things, the symbols of the four evangelists as well as a dove, a swan, a cross and dolphins.

The white stone and Bjørn Nørgaard's sculpture

The so-called White Stone plays a central role in the story of Hans Tausen. According to tradition, he stood on the stone when he preached to the people who could not find space inside the Gråbrødre Church.

In connection with Viborg's 475th anniversary of the Reformation, the stone became part of a new work of art by Bjørn Nørgaard. The sculpture was inaugurated in January 2005 and connects the historical stone with a modern representation of the reformer.

A historic garden in the Cathedral Quarter

Hans Tausens Minde is a small green space in the middle of Viborg's historic Cathedral Quarter. Here you can walk between the hedges, study the artworks and immerse yourself in the story of a period that was of great importance to both Viborg and Denmark.
